Wooden High Chairs

Wooden high chairs have a long history. Whether in use in royal nurseries, in modest homes or in formal nursery schools, these pieces of furniture were a necessity at meal time. High chairs allowed an infant or toddler the ability to dine with their families at table or provided enough meal time support for children tended by nannies in royal households or in nurseries. The first style of these chairs was made from heavy woods like oak, pine or maple. As time passed, however, more elegant woods were used in these designs such as pecan, walnut and chestnut and more intricate scrolling and designs added to the style and appeal to make it more compatible with other furnishings.

Simple Design, Simple Use The designs of these chairs were fairly uncomplicated: four legs approximately 36 inches long, a "seat" with a sturdy back and two side arm rests and a wide expanse of tray in front. Many of the designs also included scrolls and cut work on the backs and top rim of seat. In most cases, the tray was attached in a manner that allowed for it to be lifted over the toddler's head and was swung up and back toward the rear of the chair. This made it easy to remove a child from the high chair with lots of free space in front.

Contemporary High Chairs High chairs today are made from many different materials including precast vinyl, stainless steel, chrome and simple wood composition. Though these are convenient, easy to maintain and durable, most of the time, these pre-manufactured chairs are conventional rather than an addition to the room decor as with wood. They are also certified safe, Nursery Furniture, from hazardous construction.

However, these chairs are not nearly as balanced or long-lasting as a wooden high chair. If you are going to spend the money than it is recommended that you buy something that will last for years to come.
